Personal stories become art
Sophie Calle. Matrimoni, Rotture e Funerali inclusi brings photography together with text, video and autobiography at MAXXI. It runs in Gallery 2 from 16 October 2026 to 7 February 2027, exploring relationships, memory, absence and the possibility of starting again.

Eight projects made between 1978 and 2026 show Calle turning personal experience into artistic form. A relationship ending, the loss of a loved one or meeting people seeing the sea for the first time may provide a starting point. Reading matters as much as looking: words and visual details build stories that cannot be contained in one photograph.
Inside the exhibition
Curator Simona Antonacci brings several decades of work into a circular route. Photographs, videos, installations and texts explore the boundaries between private and public, reality and fiction. Precise rules and rituals shape how the artist works with experiences usually held in personal memory.
Our editorial suggestion is to leave time for reading and linger over several projects rather than moving through each section at the same speed. This is particularly helpful if you are used to exhibitions centred on individual paintings: here the story and its sequence form part of the encounter.
The main exhibition is at MAXXI, Via Guido Reni 4A. The official account also mentions a new permanent installation at Rome’s Non-Catholic Cemetery for Foreigners; that is another address and a separate visit. For this exhibition, plan for MAXXI’s Gallery 2. It is already open on the review date. Check museum hours, tickets and current notices before travelling.

Planning the journey
A trip from your hotel to the chosen venue starts at your actual accommodation address. Arrival at Fiumicino (FCO) or Ciampino (CIA), followed by travel to your accommodation, is a separate part of the journey. To discuss an event transfer, contact Hola Taxi with your chosen date, venue, departure address and passenger count. Discuss the return journey separately once your plans are clear.
