From 25 February to 20 June 2027, Palazzo Reale presents Alberto Giacometti e l’Italia. The focus is Giacometti’s relationship with Italy: its language, art, journeys and people who shaped his life. For a spring trip to Milan, it offers a more personal and specific perspective on a familiar sculptor.

The organisers bring together more than 100 works from the Fondation Giacometti: sculptures, paintings, drawings and archive documents. Curator Romain Perrin traces how Italian experiences entered different periods of the artist’s work. Recognisable figures sit within a story of travel, friendships and a continuing engagement with the country’s artistic heritage.
What you will see
The announcement names Walking Man, Il Naso from 1949 and Busto di uomo (Chiavenna II) from 1964. The latter is linked to Chiavenna, where Giacometti worked in his final years. The works invite comparisons between a whole figure in motion, the expression of a head and the sculptor’s treatment of proportion.
The exhibition follows his early encounters with antiquity during trips to Florence, Rome and Naples, sculptures from his Cubist period and recognition at the 1962 Venice Biennale. Documents add another dimension, linking developments in his artistic language to real places and encounters.
The Italian theme has a family foundation too. Giacometti grew up in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, and Italian was his first language. His father, the painter Giovanni Giacometti, passed on an interest in classical culture. Italy therefore emerges as an enduring part of his inner world.
When to visit
The venue is Palazzo Reale, Milan. The exhibition opens on 25 February and closes on 20 June 2027; a trip in March, April or May falls within that period.
Before visiting, check the official website and co-producer Marsilio Arte’s page for current ticket and admission information. Choose your day and visiting time, then arrange other plans in Milan around it, leaving the exhibition as much attention as you would like to give it.

Getting to the exhibition
If staying in Milan, you can discuss a hotel-to-Palazzo Reale journey with Hola Taxi. Include the address, party size and visiting time. Discuss an onward address or return to your hotel around your plans afterwards.
If flying in, specify Malpensa (MXP), Linate (LIN) or Bergamo (BGY). The arrival journey to your accommodation and the later exhibition trip should be described as separate routes, even when included in the same enquiry.
