Compassion and the cost of judgement
Leoš Janáček’s Jenůfa is a family tragedy shaped by the pressure of a close rural community. The heroine and her stepmother, the Kostelnička, are bound by love, fear and ideas about what is right. When care becomes an attempt to defend family honour at any cost, the consequences are devastating. It is a choice for visitors interested in serious music theatre and difficult characters.

In May 2027, Gran Teatre del Liceu presents a new production by Àlex Ollé. Jonathan Nott conducts, with Asmik Grigorian and Nina Stemme among the announced principal singers. The encounter between the two women forms the emotional centre of the opera, and a new staging offers another way to examine their story. Check the cast for your chosen date on the theatre’s website.
What you will see and hear
Janáček wrote this three-act opera from Gabriela Preissová’s play. The drama develops around Jenůfa, her relationships and the Kostelnička’s tragic decision. It reveals a world in which public opinion can displace compassion, and the wish to save someone becomes violence. Forgiveness at the end changes how the earlier events are understood.
You can follow both the characters’ actions and the orchestra’s expression of tension, inner thought and feeling. Vocal writing and music are part of the drama rather than separate attractions: they help expose contradictions within the characters. If the psychological side of opera interests you, Jenůfa is a reason to make a theatre evening a distinct part of your Barcelona trip and leave time to talk afterwards.

May performances and visiting the theatre
The Liceu has announced performances on 8, 11, 14, 16, 20 and 22 May 2027. There are no daily performances throughout that range. Choose an evening, then check its starting time, current cast and visitor conditions on the official page. Consider the serious subject when deciding whether this is the right performance for a family visit.
Gran Teatre del Liceu is at La Rambla 51–59. To organise your evening, discuss the journey with Hola Taxi, giving your performance date, Barcelona address and the theatre name. Plan the return after the opera separately. If you arrive at BCN Barcelona–El Prat that day, allow a separate stage for reaching your hotel and resting before the theatre.
