Familiar music, a different Clara
Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker brings together a winter fairy tale, ballet and music familiar even to people who rarely visit a theatre. From 8 to 12 December 2026, Badisches Staatsballett Karlsruhe performs at the Liceu. The company presents Bridget Breiner’s The Girl and The Nutcracker, giving you a chance to hear a beloved score alongside a particular interpretation of the story.

This version is set in the United States at the beginning of the twentieth century. The Stahlbaum family has lost its fortune, and Clara Marie receives a Nutcracker doll from her eccentric godfather Drosselmeyer. Family relationships, dreams and social differences shape a more personal coming-of-age story. The evening may interest both first-time December ballet visitors and audiences who enjoy comparing productions.
Dance, orchestra and imagination
At the Liceu, Tchaikovsky’s music is performed with a live orchestra. The score includes the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Waltz of the Flowers, but a complete theatrical story unfolds around these recognisable moments. Characters, costumes and scenery all establish the setting and mood, alongside individual dances.
Breiner’s choreography combines classical dancing with dramatic duets, lifts, jumps and turns. Movement conveys danger as well as tenderness. If you are bringing children, briefly introduce this particular Clara Marie beforehand, so the familiar title is not their only guide. The decision about age and family suitability remains yours; check the theatre’s current recommendations before buying tickets.

A December evening in Barcelona
Performances are announced for 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 December 2026. Select a specific date on the official Liceu page and check its starting time, seats and current visitor conditions. Photographs of an earlier staging help introduce the production’s world, but do not show the future Barcelona performances.
Gran Teatre del Liceu is at La Rambla 51–59. Choose the performance first, then plan the journey from your hotel or another address. You can discuss a transfer with Hola Taxi, giving the number of guests, date and theatre. Arrange the return separately. If you fly into BCN Barcelona–El Prat on the same day, plan the airport journey and the later theatre trip as consecutive stages.
